Another year is coming to a close and many people will be saying "new year, new me" with an entire list of goals, but have you ever had those goals fall through before January ends... especially fitness resolutions?  Starting and maintaining a new year's fitness resolution can be a daunting task, but fear not! Here are 5 tips for maintaining your fitness resolution for 2020.

1. Keep It Simple

"'I fear not the man who practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times," said the late martial-artist legend Bruce Lee, so take those words to heart and do something fitness related every single day. Most people start their journey extremely motivated with too many expectations, but as soon as their motivation drops, so does their routine.

The goal is to build the habit of being active, so start off with some daily walking, a few push-ups, anything to get you started. Once you build the habit, start ramping it up!

2. Plan A Realistic Diet

Most successful dieters will agree that the best diet is the one you can stick to, so as you start eying popular diets like Keto and Paleo, take into account the difficulty of these restrictive diets. It's hard to jump straight into a diet that takes out everything you are used to eating, but it is simple enough to work your way up to one!

Instead of cutting out sugar completely, work on limiting yourself to a certain amount daily first, and instead of completely clean eating, start off by working one or two clean meals daily into your diet. A personal rule-of-thumb you can work towards is an 80-20 principle (80% clean, whole foods and 20% whatever you want.)

4. Find and Build A Solid Routine

It is your own, personal fitness routine, so find a fitness program online and do a little customizing to have it fit your life. Having a prescribed list of things to do either at the gym or at home ensures that you never have a day where you don't know what quite to do. A good fitness program is a solid foundation for your fitness resolution, so choose one that works for you!

You can search for many free beginner workout programs and all of them will work, but a few recommendations are Muscle & Fitness and Runtastic for some ideas.

3. Find Someone To Join You

Once you start the journey to a better you, there are going to be moments where you just do not see a reason to keep going. Tremendous help is a partner who is on the same journey as you! They do not necessarily need to work out with you, but they need to understand the struggles you are going through, so find that person or online forum that will keep you on track and continuously motivate you.

Some recommended online forums for daily motivation are r/Fitness of Reddit and bodybuilding.com.

5. Measure Your Progress

Maybe the most important task on the list: track your progress! This is your journey, so be sure to own it, and you can do that by taking those bathroom selfies, writing down your daily weight, and keeping track of your progress during your fitness program.

Every step forward is extremely motivating, and at some point, you want to take a look back and see how far you've progressed.
