Prominent, Orlando-based attorney John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan has joined the collective, ongoing effort to legalize medicinal marijuana in the state of Florida, according to WFTV.

Morgan wants medical marijuana to be legalized in the state to help patients with life-threatening illnesses like cancer, an issue Morgan knows all too well.

Morgan's father utilized the drug to combat the debilitating effects of cancer and chemotherapy before passing from the disease.  Morgan claims marijuana helped curb his father's anxiety and nausea while improving his appetite during his battle with cancer.

Now, Morgan will throw in $3.5 million to help legalize medical marijuana in Florida.  He hopes to help collect the 700,000 voter signatures needed by next February to put the bill into effect.

With the filing of an official bill to legalize the drug for medicinal use now in the Florida legislature and 18 other states with similar laws enacted around the country, the reality of legal, medicinal marijuana in Florida seems more probable than ever before.

In addition, 58 percent of Florida voters supported the measure in a recent survey conducted by People United for Medical Marijuana (PUFMM).

Morgan is soon expected to have the backing of former Florida governor and longtime friend Charlie Crist, according to WFTV. Some think this could be a strategic move in Crist's potential efforts to seek reelection in the state.

In a statement released earlier this month, Florida Senate president Don Gaetz said he supports residents who propose amendments like this, but would not sign the aformentioned petition nor support an amendment which legalizes medical marijuana in Florida.
